A human mirrored art installation on the USA/Mexico border - promoting peace, tolerance and unity.

About Reflect

Wherever we are, whatever country we are from we all share the same world, warmed by the same sun. Often those in power choose to highlight our differences for political or economic gain using prejudice, ignorance and fear to divide us. Art can often be a powerful way to resist this, to join together and tell a more positive story. ‘Reflect’ (British artists Duncan McKellar and David Martin) plan to create a mirrored art installation using the power of the sun, that will demonstrate that the indomitable human spirit cannot be broken or divided, at one of the most contentious dividing lines of them all.

The border between Mexico and the United States.

‘Reflect’ will celebrate a moment of human togetherness that will resonate around the world.

The installation itself will feature up to 50 Mexican and 50 American people; each wearing a custom made mirrored mask covering only the top half of their face, pointed in the same direction, spaced 10 metres apart, standing in a perfectly straight line for one kilometre. When viewed from an elevated position, the masks will reflect a pulsating line of sun flashes that will brilliantly join together and illuminate a surreal path through the border, impossible to stop. The installation will be completely legal, inclusive and welcoming of all participants, regardless of age, race, creed, sexual orientation or physical ability. 100 very different people, joined by identical masks all standing together as one, for peace, tolerance and unity - forming one incredible ‘ray of hope’.

Duncan McKellar
Duncan McKellar. Contemporary British artist trained at Slade School of Art in London. His work is based in drawing and spans painting, sculpture, film and collage. He enjoys the physicality of using materials and working in both two and three dimensions.
David Martin. Award winning Graphic Designer based in Bristol who has over 20 years experience working on some of the world's biggest (and smallest) brands. Looking to have more fun and make a positive difference.
Recording the project

We plan to create a documentary style film that not only records the project process and end result, but critically, gives a platform to the participants themselves, their stories and how the border currently impacts on their lives and what their fears are for the future. The line itself will be filmed from both elevated static positions and multiple drone flights. Prominent or interesting participants will also be asked to feature in a series of talking head interviews.

How you can help

Do you live near the USA / Mexico border?

As we are based in the U.K, we will clearly need lots of local help from both sides of the border in order to make this installation successful. It would be incredible if we could get as many local people as possible involved and we look forward to meeting many new friends. We not only need participants to stand in the line itself, but also any logistical support before, during and after the installation.
